I have always enjoyed sewing and dabbled in patchwork for many years. My real starting point in quilting was in 1993 when a local shop, Curtains and Cushions, ran a 12 week patchwork course. We were shown 12 simple patchwork blocks but given no instructions on how to trim to size and join them together.

Rather ambitiously, I decided to make a king size quilt for our youngest daughter and an even larger quilt for my parents with a cross stitch story of their lives as a golden wedding anniversary gift. I invented lots of new blocks to make up the numbers i needed as patchwork books were hard to find and I hadn't heard of the internet. The random strips I had to make the blocks fit together and the tiny bits of fabric I joined together to avoid waste would now be called improv and crumb piecing.

I was well and truly hooked so I took a City and Guilds course in patchwork and quilting, then embroidery and a C&G course which I believe was only trialled for a short time in machine embroidery.

I served on the Region 16 committee for several years before ill health forced me to retire. Fully recovered, I discovered the Modern Group which was a joy as I have never liked working with patterns preferring to design as I go.

Hello! I’m quite a new quilter, having only taken it up in 2020, after many years of pursuing other creative endeavours, such as knitting and sewing. That year I enrolled on the the C&G Textiles certificate course with the School of Stitched Textiles, as this course combined machine embroidery and P&Q, and during the two-year duration of this online course, I made the happy discovery but I am definitely a quilter rather than an embroiderer!

I do, however, have a history with the Guild, as my mum Maureen Powell was an early member of the Sprat and Winkle Quilters in Hampshire in the 1980s and I remember going to a few meetings as a child. I also still have one of their group quilts, Bed of Roses, as my mum won in a raffle!

I like aspects of both Modern and Contemporary quilting. I like to think I strive for simplicity and clean lines but find myself veering off into random and messy. I enjoy many different techniques: foundation paper piece of its accuracy, but also the freedom and unexpected results at hat improv piecing can bring.

I really enjoy the community of the Quilters Guild, particularly the Modern Group, with its regular challenges and swaps!

I join the Quilters Guild and the Modern Group in 2022 and the committee as Exhibitions Officer in 2024, where my role is to find venues and opportunities to show our quilts to the wider public. Please contact me if you have any ideas for this!

Hi all, I'm Kera and I've recently joined the Modern Quilt Group committee to help maintain the groups website - a good fit for me, as I'm a software developer in my day job!

I'm quite new to quilting in general, I dipped my toes in 12 years ago when I gave English Paper Piecing a try, and have only just finished that top - I'm hoping it won't take another 12 years to finish it! More recently I've tried machine quilting and have completed one quilt, but can definitely say that I've been bitten by the quilting bug and have several more quilts in progress.

I'm looking forward to exploring different techniques and styles of quilting and getting to know everyone in the modern community
