British Quilt Study Group - Gallery

An exciting exhibition "Treasured Threads: Unpicking Gunnersbury?s Quilts" was held at Gunnersbury Park Museum, Popes Lane, London W5 4NH on 15 October 2019 ? 12 January 2020.

This exhibition took an in-depth look at one of Gunnersbury?s most remarkable items; a pieced and appliqued top created by a local Acton family in 1825. An outstanding piece of craftwork and significant to Britain?s history of quilting, the Acton Top features contemporary figures in Regency dress, Biblical scenes, animals and plants. Comparing the Acton Top with other historic quilts from the museum collection, the exhibition investigates how quilting developed from the late 1780s to the 1850s and explores associated technological and social changes.

Also held during the weekend of Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 November, 10:00 ? 16:00 was The Great Gunnersbury Quilting Bee.

There was a chance to take part in many interesting activities ? ?Come and celebrate all things quilting and stitching at a packed weekend of activity to complement our special exhibition Treasured Threads: Unpicking Gunnersbury?s Quilts. We?ll have talks by textile artist Ruth Singer, historic quilt expert Bridget Long and Curator of the Quilters? Guild Collection, Heather Audin. Pop-up displays include Canadian Red Cross quilts, a selection of quilts by renowned contemporary quilter Janet Clare, and an exhibition of Criminal Quilts, an art and heritage project by Ruth Singer. Support our charity crafting activities; hand stitch a patchwork block with Project Linus and knit a blanket square for Cats Protection. Make a Mug Mat at Sunday?s quilt-as-you-go workshop, or gain new ideas for embellishing your favourite old clothes at our upcycling workshops. ?
