This red and white Northumberland patchwork quilt came from a farm close to Haggerston Castle, near to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and only a few miles from Berwick upon Tweed. It is not at all square! The front is a trellis of Turkey red squares set on point against wide white cotton strips. The quilt is very closely and neatly quilted with tiny stitches making a grid of small squares on the red squares with a fan type design between but in one direction only. In the other direction the quilting is of regular diagonal lines along the whole length of the white strip.

The reverse of the quilt was once plain white but now has various patchwork shapes appliqued on in a very random fashion - possibly to cover worn areas? There are diamonds and hexagons of red and white sewn into some unusual designs and seemingly scattered over the back of the quilt which has also been bordered by a wide strip of red and white floral fabric with a diamond and flower weave.
