Mixed Messages
Most of the red squares in this Log Cabin coverlet are made of Turkey red twill while other fabrics include indigo-dyed prints and some very faded small flower fabrics with a white ground.
The coverlet consists of 24 10-inch blocks with an eight-inch border of doubled linen. However, what makes it interesting is its method of construction. Each block has been foundation pieced on linen with a running stitch, then individually hemmed and finally the blocks assembled by over-stitching. I have heard this technique referred to in North America as the ?pot holder? method of Log Cabin. It is certainly at variance with most other methods of Log Cabin construction found in the UK.
This quilt sends ?mixed messages?. It has come through my husband?s Scottish family and I would put its date somewhere between 1910 and 1920. The family does have Canadian connections as, prior to World War I, several members emigrated there. Is it Scots or is it Canadian?
