This striking quilt consists of nine plain fabric strips 4¾? (12cm) wide and eight Sawtooth strips 6¾? (17cm) wide.
The ?teeth? are made from a Turkey Red cotton and everything else is a small print cotton ? all the same apart from the two outside strips which are in a slightly different print. The backing is plain white cotton and the quilt has a cotton wadding.
The patchwork construction is by machine and one edge is stitched by the method discovered by ?Pauline Adams? i.e. the back and top have been machined together and then turned to enclose the wadding. The other three edges are butted and are top-stitched by machine.
The quilting is typical Cumbrian wave quilting with the ?waves? ½? (1cm) apart and 3½? (9cm) from top to bottom of each wave. There are twelve stitches to the inch in white cotton.
There is no definite provenance to the quilt but it is believed to have been made in Whitehaven which is situated on the west coast of Cumbria.
