This lovely Welsh wholecloth quilt has a gold cotton sateen on one side and a beautifully muted Paisley print sateen on the reverse. It is neatly quilted with a yellow thread and shows very well defined traditional Welsh quilting patterns including four-lobed flowers, a variety of leaves and a very nice central wheel. Whole quilt
Plain yellow cotton sateen was used for one side of the quilt.
As is common for Welsh quilts, it has a frame layout, with double lines dividing the centre section from the borders.
Central design of the quilt
The central "wheel" or "coin" consists of a circle filled with square diamonds surrounded by concentric circles upon which are placed lovely beech leaves giving the effect of a sunflower.
Inner corner and fan (true colour)
The corner fans which have unusual herringbone 'vanes' topped with a zig-zag that echoes the centre.
This photo shows the true gold colour.

A small zig-zag surrounds this followed by a double lined circle. This whole design sits within a square diamond background with several different leaf patterns all placed symmetrically, with corner fans which have unusual herringbone 'vanes' topped with a zig-zag that echoes the centre. The larger long leaves and some of the smaller long leaves bear a resemblance to a Paisley pear while the small fat leaves are more akin to beech leaves with different fillings.
The border also has a square diamond background and has three different large leaf designs repeated symmetrically along each border. In each corner is a lovely double-lined four lobed flower with a centre of three concentric circles.
The quilt has handstitched butted edges with sheeps wool wadding and came from Rhos-on-sea, Conwy, North Wales but it is not known if it was made there.
