Marble Layers Quilt

by Kaffe Fassett

A new project from Kaffe Fassett's latest book Quilts From An English Manor House

Contrasting concentric layers appear to merge in and out of focus in this quilt. A new monochromatic colouring of the Stone Log Cabin quilt from Quilts in Italy, it showcases predominantly grey and contrasting black-and-white prints.  Kaffe Fassett's Quilts at an English Manor House by Kaffe Fassett, Taunton Press, RRP £26, is available online and from all good bookshops. Read on for instructions on how to create this stunning project, courtesy of Kaffe and the team at Taunton Press.

cutting table

cutting table and cutting out

Please refer to the Cutting Table (image left) which shows the fabric number, the width of the strips, the number of strips required for each round, and the log patch measurements. All fabrics strips are cut across the width of fabric except for Fabric 1 which is cut in strips down the length of fabric to achieve the required effect of the stripe fabric.

For logs that are longer than 40in sew strips end to end to obtain the required length, using ¼in seams, pressing seams open, then trimming strips to the required length.

backing and binding - cutting

Backing:

Trim Fabric (numbered 13) to 231cm x 221cm.

Binding:

From Fabric 1 remove selvedges and, down the length of fabric, cut 16 strips 2½in wide. Sew end to end with 45° seams.

centre patch diagram

sewing the centre patch

A centre panel finished at 8½in x 4½in is surrounded by log cabin strips in varying widths, each sewn around the centre concentrically. Each ‘log’ is sewn starting at one end with Log A, turning the quilt 90° to add Log B, and again to add Log C, and again to add Log D before repeating with the next round of logs. In order to keep the quilt in shape, start stitching each new round at the opposite end to the starting point of the previous round. Refer to the diagrams (image right) for visual instruction.

making the quilt

Using a design wall will help to place patches in the required layout. Use ¼in seams throughout. Referring to the cutting table and all images, add Round 1 Log A to the bottom of the centre panel as shown in the centre patch diagram above, followed by Log B to the left side, Log C to the top and Log D to the right side to complete Round 1. Press carefully after adding each log. Rotate and start Round 2 at the opposite end, as shown in the Rounds Assembly Diagram and continue with each round, making sure you start stitching each round at the opposite end to the previous round. Add all 20 rounds to complete the quilt top.
