Region 2
In Person
Join us for a wonderful day at Canterbury Cathedral. The day is a partnership between the Friends of Canterbury Cathedral and The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles. Spaces are strictly limited, so book early!
We will have the exclusive use of the Community Studio for an English Paper Piecing workshop. The patterns have been designed especially for this event and are based on the medieval ‘Cosmati’ pavement in the Trinity Chapel of the Cathedral.
During the day, one of the Cathedral Volunteers will show us the precious mosaic and provide information about it. This stunning 13th Century geometric mosaic is located right in front of the site of St. Thomas Becket’s shrine and is one of three surviving floors of its kind in England.
As part of the day’s cost you will be provided with a complete kit to make some of the blocks devised. All you need to bring is a pair of paper scissors and a pair of small scissors for cutting the fabric and snipping threads. A glue pen would be a good idea, but we will have some for sale and also glue pen refills.
A sandwich buffet will be served in the Cathedral restaurant and there will be cake at afternoon tea-time. The day will finish about 4.00pm and the Cathedral has invited anyone who would like, to attend Evensong (5.30pm – 6.15pm). As entrance to the Cathedral is included in the cost for the day, people will have chance to go around the Cathedral at lunch time and after the class finishes.
The cost includes:
• Free entry to the Cathedral
• The talk from a Cathedral Volunteer on the mosaic pavement
• A sandwich lunch in the Cathedral restaurant
• Cake in the afternoon
• Patterns and kit for the English Paper Piecing (mosaic piecing) project.
If you travel to Canterbury by car, we advise that you park in one of the three Park-and-Ride facilities. The walk to the Cathedral will take approximately six minutes and is a level walk. There are two railway stations in Canterbury. The nearest is Canterbury East, which is a nine-minute walk away.
