Area Day February 2024

Fidget Quilts for Dementia patients

We love Area Days. With less people there are more opportunities to meet new friends, chat over a cup of tea and a sewing machine and work on something small and achievable. Once again, Jackie Sparks gave us a day to remember making Fidget Quilts for patients suffering from dementia.

People suffering from this awful disease often display agitation by picking at themselves or their clothes with their fingers; it has been accepted that for many, things such as fidget quilts, covered in tactile objects can seriously help as they offer the opportunity to pick with no damage and can act as enormous stress relief.

Calmore Community Centre once again hosted Region 3 for our Area Day in February and 18 of us sat and in one day, turned out 20 finished or almost finished quilts. Using a range of items from buttons to cars, quilt sandwiches were embellished with whatever we could think of. Many items were shared between the group and everyone's quilt looks fantastic.

The quilts are either destined for relatives, friends or local dementia groups who are very keen to receive them. Well done ladies, it was a great day and everything made will be going to help someone in real need.

Look at all that stuff!!!

Margaret used one of her Mum's lace coasters to add texture.

Excellent use of Prairie Points.

Made by Jackie during the morning

The ribbon on the zip pull makes it so much easier to fidget with.

An excellent use of an old workshop item.

Love the shapes behind the netting!

Jenny was giving out medals! I wonder what was in the pocket?

Jackie's brilliant use of a toy car. She's now banned from Poundland!

Sew busy and so much to look at.

Kate's blue tube made a wonderful sound when pulled - brilliant!

Some wonderful touchy feely textures here

Please note Pippa's imaginative use of the bunting when she found she'd made too much!

Love the way that the buttons were hidden under a placket from another project

Michelle's first Region 3 experience. Didn't she do well!!!

Some really clever lacing here

This one really pops

Lovely colours - so serene!

A great way to use empty thread reels
