Herts Regional Day at Eaton Bray April 13th 2024
Hello quilters.
Oh, my goodness. What an incredibly fantastic, inspiring and fun day was had at the Regional Day. I would like to thank everyone who joined us for supporting the events the Regional Committee organise. Your continued support means so much to us.
The first presenter was Dr Susan Kay-Williams, the CEO of The Royal School of Needlework, entitled 5 Coronations, 3 Weddings and a Funeral. Susan gave a fabulous presentation on the beginnings of The School founded in 1872 by Lady Victoria Welby, who was the goddaughter and cousin Queen Victoria. By 1903, Princess Helena the 3rd daughter of Queen Victoria was the head of The School. The presentation outlined the exquisite and tremendous work was produced throughout the decades, sometimes with only 48 hours to complete the pieces. Susan shared some of the fascinating stories behind the acquisition of some pieces of The School’s history. Susan finished her presentation with a Q&A. More information about The Royal School of Needlework can be found on this link Our history | Royal School of Needlework | The full history of RSN (royal-needlework.org.uk) After the lunch break, we had our Show & Tell. It is always so wonderful to see the work of our quilters. And yes, there was a raffle as well. With everyone feed and watered, the afternoon presentation began. Pascale Michalski presented her talk entitled 'From Painter to Quilter'. Pascale outlined her journey into quilting from her beginnings as artist, painter, illustrator, and a visual storyteller. From her very first quilt using her Singer Confidence machine, which she said gave her the confidence she needed, to the tremendous silk painted quilts that she now creates. Pascale is a wonderful storyteller, and her quilts reflect this as there is more to the story in the quilt than you expect. Yes, Pascale dyes the designs onto silk, then backs the silk with white cotton, before adding the wadding then backing. She freely admitted that she needs to get better at her binding. Pascale finished off her presentation for a Q&A.
