Welcome to The Miniature Quilt Group
Welcome to the Miniatures division of The Guild. We have had our hoped-for avalanche of pennants which which we asked for in March. Please see our Pennants for Parchworkers page for updates. We now have 2,500+ pennants which we will raffle (tombola style) at The Festival of Quilts in August. The guidelines are very simple, we all know the shape of a pennant, and the size should be no larger than an A4 equivalent, and as small as you like, 3 layers, quilted and appropriately finished. They do not have to be miniatures. The style is your choice, applique, wholecloth, pieced etc. anything goes. And do visit our http://pennants4patchworkers.wordpress.com website tosee the pennants made so far, and join with us in raising funds for The Guild. Also on the pennants site, are addresses for you to send your finished treasures to us, but we shall be at FoQ if you want to give them in there, or to any member of the Miniatures committee. Thank you for your help.
Perhaps you are viewing this page to see what hapens in the Miniatures group. Well,at present we have two challenges for the AGM, one a group, the other an individual effort. Only two weeks to go before that particular venture finishes, but next years is well in to the planning and will involve every member of the group. As a member of the Miniatures group you will receive our brilliant newsletter three times a year, and be in contact with like minded quilters who enjoy the challenge of working small. We enjoy a dedicated yahoo group and swap ideas regularly on all sorts of quilty topics. I hope that this whets your appetite to join in the fun.
Happy stitchin'
Judith

Working With The Regions
The miniature quilt group have offered the services of their members to attend regional Guild events to demonstrate miniature quilt making to help promote awareness of their group and increase membership of the specialist group. Many people think making a miniature is beyond their abilities and we are keen to encourage other quilters to have a go at making a miniature. We are promoting A4 (8” x 11”) as a good size to work to in order to begin to scale down your work.
The miniature group also has a number of teachers and speakers who are available to attend regional events to hold workshops or give presentations.
Any region or local quilt group interested in linking up with our group should contact the co-ordinator Judith Dursley who loves phone calls and e-mails from members.
Annual Strategic and Development Plan

- To promote miniature quilting practices and awareness through training, workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions

- To encourage the making, exhibition and appreciation of miniature quilts
Development Plan Objectives for 2009
- To develop closer links with the regions of The Quilters’ Guild to provide workshops or demonstrations on miniature quilt making
- To promote the work of the Miniature Quilt Group at the Festival of Quilts with a small exhibition and demonstration of techniques
- To promote miniature quilt making by inviting professional quilters to take part in a challenge to produce an A4 size quilt
- To encourage experienced members of the group to produce written articles for Small Talk, The Quilter, Popular Patchwork, Patchwork & Quilting and other relevant magazines
- To increase membership of the group as a result of the above activities
- To provide advice and guidance for specialist group members to develop their miniature quilt making skills
Pennants for Patchworkers
We are having lots of interest in our pennants website and hopefully this will translate in to a lovely large number of these beauties for our tombola in August
Pennants can be any size of Isosceles triangle up to an A4, three layers and quilted. A hanging sleeve is not required. We are hoping to collect in about 2,000 pieces of work - can you contribute, please? When I first knew what our project was, I must admit to being a bit sceptical; now I'm "into them" and have so far made four and have another three works in progress. Any technique (almost) works, so far I've appliqued, pieced, and stitched a Celtic design. I want to try shadow applique next;it's a technique I've never tried before, and a small piece is a good place to start. If you need any more information, please contact me and I'll happily chat about Pennants with you. Judith. (Our 2,000target could be increased to 2,500 with a little help from our friends)
Come and see the photos of pennants we've received so far, and find out more about making yours, at www.pennants4patchworkers.wordpress.com . Margery.
Pennants for Patchworkers: Running Total, updated by Judith on 30 July, with two weeks still to go: Joy is brilliant on the computer, but maths is another matter- so at a conservative estimate, we now have 2,128 pennants- Hurrah! Thanks to everyone for their contributions, and lets smash that 2,500 target next. Who knows, 3,000 is not out of the question! This number is pennants in our possession, and we look forward to receiving loads more either in the post or at the Festival! Our stand is A 59, and we’ll have a table dedicated to receipt of pennants so that you don’t have to queue to hand yours in .
The Big Count takes place on Monday 16th!! All the pennants received so far will be counted, and the total will be here on Monday Night. We are still happy to receive more, and stand A59 will have a table dedicated to handing in of your donations. Look forward to seeing you there…in the meantime, happy stitchin’ Judith 12 August.
When you visit our Pennants for Patchworkers website: www.pennants4patchworkers.wordpress.com/ , don't forget to investigate the other pages, especially the "What's Occurrin'" page:

Saturday 28th August 2010:
Many thanks to all who took part in our pennants extravaganza, either making or winning or buying a ticket and not winning. The total for four days was £5,364.83, but that’s only the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning. We had such a wonderful response, that we still have pennants which may appear in a raffle (or tombola) near you. The above total will increase over the next few weeks - keep checking. Please send in pictures of winning pennants in situ, we’d love to know that they’re in good homes. Thanks to everyone, JudithJoining The Miniature Quilt Group

Having just taken over from Julia, I'm trying to increase membership numbers for our Miniature Group. Hopefully, members of Miniatures have now had their Smalltalk, and I hope that you are enjoying your magazine. When Julia completed her term, she gave a pattern "Beachhuts" for us to make. Well, Julia, there is so much interest in South Wales, that we now have huts with windows, doors and spaces between. Thank you for the spark of inspiration. I live in Swansea, for those of you at the AGM, just around the corner from the Brangwyn Hall, and am addicted to mini's. Each time I see a block, I wonder how small I can make it. I taught a workshop in Port Talbot yesterday which I enjoyed very much, and another one is planned in August (17th) in Swansea. I'm also hoping to teach in Carmarthen (need son to agree to transport) in September and speaking in Bristol in the same month. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about Miniatures - if I don't know the answer, I may know someone who will. Hopefully we'll keep updating this website, Margery is the Website Co-ordinator, with bits of news, hints, tips etc. Off to watch Murray play tennis now, and make a few more beach huts! Regards, Judith
Website Editor: Margery Allcock
Hello - I'm Margery Allcock, and I've just taken on the job of Website Editor for the Miniature Quilt Group.
My two favourite machines are my sewing machine and my computer, so maybe this is my ideal job!
I've been in the computing business since the '60s, and have recently retired to spend more time with my quilts; and I've been quilting for a few years now and am besotted with small things.
I am hoping that you will all send me items which I can add to this web page - about minis you have made (with good quality photos, if possible, bearing copyright in mind), events involving minis ... in fact anything relevant and interesting.
Bye for now, Margery.
