Welcome to Region 17: From Your Regional Co-ordinator

Some of you may recognise the quilt in the photograph.

This was the winning quilt in the Group category at Festival of Quilts in 2007. It was made by twelve members of Region 17 who gave themselves the pseudonym of ‘A Dozen of Us’. The quilt was made as a chopped up challenge using a painting by the Irish artist Cecil Maguire. Some members of Region 17 had the pleasure of showing the quilt to Cecil and his wife Mona. Cecil was thrilled to see a much larger version of his painting, ‘Claddagh Quay’, produced in fabric. His comment was ‘You’ve done me proud’.

We had a great meeting at Margaret Woodside’s home when we looked at the EQA suitcase exhibition ‘Hot and Cold’. This was loaned to us by the Irish patchwork Society.

Our next meeting on 8 Apr will be a one day workshop with the American quilter Denise Labadie. Denise describes her workshop below.

I am constantly asked about the stone and sky fabric that I use in my Irish quilts. There just isn't any commercial fabric out in the market that you can buy that has the types of colours and textures that many quilters are looking for.  In this one-day hands-on class we will learn (some rather surprising) techniques for using Setacolour paints to create your own uniquely textured fabrics customized for use in your own creations.

You can see her work on her website:
